When Kojiro's adoptive father Kanemaki Jisai was tasked with killing the Fudo Yugetsusai, a feared ruthless swordsmen who harmed the villagers, Tenki and Kojiro went to fight Fudo as well. Tenki had gotten injured fighting Fudo and gained a facial scar as well as a result. Both Kojiro and Tenki were saved by Jisai who later killed Fudo. When Jisai opened his sword school, Tenki became a student of Jisai's while Kojiro was not allowed to. Tenki and Kojiro had gotten closer as they learned more about the sword and their passion for it. Once Kojiro had left to follow the path of the sword, Jisai finally accepted that it was Kojiro's destiny and Jisai tasked Tenki of finding Kojiro and giving him his certificate for the Ganryu sword style.

Hozoin Arc[]

While on his journey to find Kojiro, Tenki stops at Fushimi castle's construction sight. There, he meets Matahachi Honiden who is pale and Tenki gives him medication. While Tenki draws a map of the construction sight, he asks Matahachi to look out for government officials since a construction worker complained to soldiers that Tenki is a spy drawing a map for intel purposes. Although Matahachi was supposed to be looking out for officials, he failed to and Tenki ended up surrounded by multiple soldiers. After taking down 5 soldiers, Tenki was almost dead and with his dying breath, he told Matahachi to deliver Kojiro's certificate. Assuming Tenki was Kojiro, Matahachi took Kojiro's identity and Tenki's money.
